I’m one of the few people in the world that thought it was completely pointless to get dressed every day. Especially if I was only going to be at home cleaning the house. Let me tell you why that was SO WRONG!
So in my earlier years…
of being a homemaker I, like so many others, thought it was going to be a cake walk. I would wake up, sit and have my coffee and watch tv and just do what I felt like when I felt like.
HA! What a joke.
I quickly learned that nothing gets done. At least for me anyways. Yeah sure at first it was awesome I was just hanging out in my pj’s and having slow mornings at home while drinking my coffee and catching up on my shows. Then in the afternoon….about two hours before my husband would get home I would look at the clock and freak out because there were all these tasks I needed to get done. So I would rush around cleaning and cooking.
And if I was lucky I would finish everything in time.
It just wasn’t working out.
So then I tried this whole get ready thing. I wasn’t about it at first because I thought it was such a waste of my time and effort. But, I was wrong.
When I finally did get dressed in the morning, even if I didn’t do my hair or makeup, I was instantly more productive.
Not that I would get super crazy either. Some days I would wear jeans. But others it was something as simple as leggings and a tee. I just made sure that I had clothes that were specific to bedtime so that way when I “got dressed” each day I was physically changing out of them signaling my brain that it’s time to get moving.
I HIGHLY recommend that you find what clothing makes you feel productive and change into it each and every day. If you need to do your hair and a full face of make up, go for it! You will instantly surprise yourself at how much more you accomplish.
Reasons you should be getting dressed every day…
- Prepared for anything! This is super important because I can think of numerous times that I was still without a bra at 2pm and someone would come knocking on my door…This is not a cute interaction!
- It sets the energy for the day. You literally are making the energy around you move and a body in motion stays in motion. This is super important when you’re trying to wrangle children, clean house, and cook all the meals.
- Increases your mental health. Getting ready every day is taking the time to look at yourself and make yourself feel good! Some find that by wearing makeup they are more confident. Others have a signature look/outfit that makes them feel ready for the day and also boosts confidence. Whatever it is for you by doing it each day you’re locking in that little bit of self care and happiness and over time that turns into big results.
- Your attitude changes. If you have a few days in a row where you just sit around doing nothing you eventually find yourself bored and unhappy. By dressing each and every day you’re increasing your mental healthy (as we discussed) and that changes your outward attitude. We as homemakers, mothers and housewives give so much of ourselves to other people and our attitude sets the tone for our homes. This is why ANYTHING that we can do to make our attitude better is worth it!
- Setting family expectations. You as a mother, homemaker, and housewife are the cornerstone of the home and by setting the right example you teach your family what should be done each day. When we make our beds every morning our children are likely to follow. The same is to be said about getting dressed. When we dress and make ourselves presentable each day we are signaling to the rest of our families that the way we act, dress, and feel matters. There is nothing wrong with how much or how little you choose to do but it’s a great way to inform our families that there is a time for snoozing and relaxing and a time for being up, productive and properly dressed for the rest of the day.
Especially if you’re a mom!
I became a mother just over six months ago and it’s been the monkey wrench in a perfectly good routine. (If you haven’t noticed already…I’m pretty big into routines.) I love having my little girl but I had to find a new normal.
Those people that tell you to sleep when the baby sleeps…that’s a lie! WORK while the baby sleeps! You gave up sleep when you became a parent. That’s just the way the cookie crumbles my friend.
That’s why setting aside a little time each morning to get ready and start your day is super important. My “daily outfits” now lean more towards comfort but I still only wear real pajamas to bed and everything else is my daily attire.
I’ve also implemented wearing tennis shoes inside! (These are my inside only shoes to keep things clean) But this has helped even more! It’s amazing how easy it is to just sit down and start to relax when baby is down for a nap but I find that wearing tennis shoes all day not only helps support my back it also keeps me moving. At most jobs you wear shoes all day anyways, so why not at home? Of course I do this ONLY during my “working” hours. But, it’s helped a ton in keeping the work flowing throughout the day.
