Guests of all types
Hosting house guests is one of my favorite things! Military life usually has you living farther away from family then you would like. So it’s always a real treat when family gets to come stay with us for awhile.
My goal is to make anyone that enters my home feel welcome. I want people to feel like our home is theirs, and that they are more comfortable here than they would be anywhere else. Basically, when our families use most of their vacation time to travel and see us instead of taking a real vacation I want it to be more than worth it.
Plan Ahead
Usually any guests that we’re going to have let us know well in advance. Which is nice but sometimes family or friends will pop by with last minute notice and that’s why I ALWAYS recommend planning ahead.
It’s the little things that matter. That’s why you should have a great cleaning routine (morning routine, night routine) and that will never be something you have to worry about.
I also think you should consider keeping extra toiletries on hand. That way if a guest is unexpected then you’re prepared in the event they are not.
Master Quick Recipes
Having a few meals and desserts that you can throw together in no time flat is ALWAYS a great idea. Even if you don’t have guests coming. You just never know.
Be sure that whatever recipes you decide are ones you know like the back of your hand. It’s also best if they’re recipes that you always seem to have the ingredients for.
When guests are over you don’t want to spend all of your time running around trying to shop or in the kitchen. You want to be able to enjoy the time you have with them and thats exactly why these should be quick and easy.
I also like to keep a wide range of beverages in the house. Not everyone exclusively drinks water so having options for tea, coffee, or even lemonade is super considerate.
Guest Room
Whether this is an actual guest room or not be sure that the linens are always ready. I know the military life for sure keeps family away for longer periods of time because you’re usually farther away. So maybe the linens are cleaned regularly. Change that now! I know no one is there to sleep in them but still things get dusty and you want everything to be as fresh as possible before a guest stays over.
Get in the habit of washing the guest linens at least once a month. Then if you don’t have time before someone shows up you know they haven’t gone stale in the last 6 months they’ve been on the bed.
Entertaining and even hosting last minute house guests is always a good time…as long as you’re prepared. In the event that you have last minute house guests pop up by implementing these few things today they will have your house guests thinking you’re a super host.
