These 5 winter decluttering items are the first 5 I think you should jump to this winter. WHY? Because they’re easy and we all usually have massive amounts of these items and after you’ve tackled these I bet you have the motivation to keep going!
1. Extra Blankets
This is something I’m completely terrible with. I LOVE BLANKETS. It could be 100 degrees out and I will still cover my legs with a blanket while watching a movie on the couch.
We all probably hang on to more blankets then we actually need. So how’s the time to start the downsizing process.
Winter is the best time in my opinion because it’s when they’re most used. If there is a blanket or 12 still sitting in that closet and it hasn’t been touched by anyone in the family…it’s got to go. UNLESS, it’s of sentimental value. And don’t just keep things and tell yourself it’s sentimental, be 100% sure it is.
2. Undergarments
Women are the worst with this…or maybe again, it’s just a personal fault.
But, do you honestly need 400 pairs of underwear. Including the ones you wore back in high school…10+ years ago! (Has it really been that long?!)
My guess is no. Any undies, bras, and socks you don’t constantly gravitate towards, find comfortable, or fit…need to go!
3. All other clothing
I keep this separate simple because clothing is a huge category and everyone does things differently.
Whether you keep all your clothes out all year round or you take the seasonal approach, start small. Even if you only purge a handful of items, it’s a start.
Start from one end of your closet or dresser and sift through every item. Get rid of the things that “make you look terrible” first, then the things you’ll never wear again. Now repeat this process over and over, month after month.
Eventually, you will get your clothing down to only the things you love and make you look and feel great.
4. Tupperware
Holy cow, the stinking Tupperware.
This is the one place in my kitchen that drives both my husband and I completely insane! There always seems to be so many lids and bottoms, never any organization that sticks. It’s a nightmare.
Here’s what I recommend…keep your favorites and discard the rest. IF like us we only have a few of the glass ones we LOVE but keep hanging out to the crappy plastic because we need something…still throw out the crap and invest in the ones you love.
It’s always better to keep the things you enjoy in your home and get rid of the excess, even if it means your short for awhile.
5. Paper Documents
With winter in full swing now is definitely the time to sit down and go through ALL your paper documents.
I actually did this not to long ago and I threw away things from 2006!
If it’s a coupon drawer, your command center, or your filing cabinet go through it. Sort the documents and file them properly. Going through each document sounds like a nightmare…I know…but, it’s so worth it in the end.
Instead of tackling it all in a day you can also just start with one area or file section. That way it’s not to overwhelming and then you don’t just get crazy and start throwing everything away and accidentally discard something you need…take it from someone who knows.
ALSO, keep down on your paper with paperless bills and statements. I know this isn’t for everyone but if you don’t mind the extra emails then switch and it will save you from doing this in the future.
There are so many things that you can “winter declutter” but I think that this is a great place to start! Also, don’t feel like you have to do all of these things in one day. As I mentioned before…start small. You’ll be surprised at how starting small might actually end up in you purging more!
