There are a few things that I believe every homemaker should know. These aren’t difficult but the come in handy far more than one would think.
1. Simple Mending
Now I’m not telling you to become the queen of the sewing machine but I do think that every homemaker should learn out to mend the occasional ripped toy, shirt, or missing button. We live in a world where mending simply isn’t common. Most people just throw the item away and then go get a new one. Why spend all that extra money when with a needle and some thread you could fix it right up yourself.
2. Back Pocket Recipes
As a military spouse we are constantly meeting new people, going to events/gatherings, or introducing some new comer to the base. I always seem to be bringing in something. Whether it be a dessert or casserole I have come to find that there are a few dishes that I’m known for. I take pride in my cooking and baking so this particular thing is a bit easier for me. I seriously think you should find at the very least one appetizer, entree, side and dessert that you can nail each and every time you make it. That way when you get invited over, or your spouse has a birthday at work you already have a delicious recipe that you can fall back on.
3. Frugality
Usually when you’re a homemaker or looking to start down that journey you are cutting your household income in half. That’s exactly why learning more than just budgeting is beneficial. This looks different for each and every family. In our case it meant that we had to watch the extra spending. But once we were debt free (you can read all about that here) we had so much extra money each month and we were already so used to living a frugal lifestyle, instead of going back out and spending that money, we decided that this was the perfect opportunity to start to save for those big purchases later on in life.
4. Budgeting
This goes hand in hand with learning the art of frugal living. Without a budget it’s almost impossible to know where to cut back on spending to achieve a frugal lifestyle
5. Cleaning Hacks
This is something that I’ve found to be extremely beneficial! Learning what weird things you may have around the home can remove stains, or a cheaper and more environmentally friendly cleaning product replacement. There is no shortage of hacks for things that we in our fast paced “want it done for us” mentality have. As homemakers, it’s our duty to not only save the money where we can, but always have a backup option for when things run out.
